Whakatau

On the 12th of February, most of the school went outside for a Whakatau at 9:10. A Whakatau is like a welcoming assembly. It is used at Ngaio School for welcoming new students, parents and teachers. In our class (and Room 10, our buddy class) we welcomed Mr. Byrne and Asher.
It was a good day for the Whakatau. The sun’s beautiful rays shined on everyones faces, the cool crisp air breezed through the trees and every single person attending was singing with all their might. After a few songs, the new teachers got up and introduced themselves.
The last thing the new parents, teachers and children had to do was greet the guests of honour. If they were girls, they would hongi the girls and kiss the boys, and if they were boys they would do it the other way around. Then was an awesome Kapa Haka performance. It was the end of the Whakatau! Rowan, a Room 11 student said, "I enjoyed performing in the Kapa Haka and I can’t wait for the next Whakatau!"
